Early Elections Possible Before Jan-Feb 2024: PM Kakar

Early Elections

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar stated in an interview with a local TV channel that the general elections in the country could occur before January-February 2024.

However, he reiterated that the Election Commission of Pakistan held the authority to determine the election date. Kakar emphasized their readiness to prepare for free and fair elections once the date is announced.

If the Supreme Court issues an election-related order, the caretaker government will adhere to it, he assured.

Furthermore, Kakar pledged to ensure a level playing field for all political parties in the upcoming general elections, allowing them to hold public meetings and rallies.

May 9 Incident Participants Are Not Labeled as Terrorists

In response to a question, the caretaker premier stated that he did not consider those involved in the May 9 incidents as terrorists.

He explained, “Individuals involved in the May 9 events violated the law, and those who break the law should face legal consequences.” The premier clarified that he was not targeting the PTI as a party but rather those who attacked state institutions and caused damage to public property.

Addressing another question, the caretaker PM expressed the government’s desire to steer the country’s economy in the right direction, enabling the next elected government to build upon it.

He mentioned, “The concept of a charter of economy is an appealing one,” and he expressed his willingness for a “charter of democracy” among political parties.

IMF Approves Targeted Subsidy

In response to a query about providing relief to electricity consumers amid skyrocketing inflation, the caretaker premier revealed that the IMF did not oppose targeted subsidies for poor electricity consumers.

”Electricity theft shifts the burden onto those who pay their bills honestly and regularly.” He announced that they would privatize the ex-WAPDA distribution companies (Discos) to deal with the crisis.

The caretaker PM announced that they would make some tough decisions and try to extend the tax net by 20 to 22%. “Ninety percent of the people do not pay their taxes.” The tough decision would ultimately benefit the masses, he added.

Lastly, the premier said that he would make sincere efforts to meet their goals. They were focusing on boosting trade with other countries.
