Dr. Aasim Yusuf, the personal physician of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, faced complications upon his arrival at Adiala Jail, where Khan is currently serving his sentence. Unfortunately, Dr. Aasim was unable to present his identification to the jail staff. Security personnel requested a verification card from the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centres, which he could not provide.
Due to this setback, the doctor left the jail premises without informing the staff of his departure. He had specifically come to conduct a medical examination of Khan.
It’s important to note that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had previously called off its planned protest for Tuesday after receiving assurances from the government regarding a medical examination for Khan. PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan stated in a video message that the federal government had contacted them and promised that doctors would be sent to Adiala Jail the following morning, thereby restoring Khan’s access to medical care.
Gohar mentioned that he had sought a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who confirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring medical access for Khan. Following this, the PTI leadership and its political committee unanimously agreed to postpone the planned protest.
Last week, Imran Khan’s party had announced a protest at Islamabad’s D-Chowk on October 15, coinciding with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit taking place in the capital. The SCO includes major nations such as India, China, and Russia, making it a significant event, with around 900 delegations and approximately 200 international media members expected to cover the conference.
