NA Session
Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Senator Ishaq Dar, has underscored that in the event President Dr. Arif Alvi fails to summon a National Assembly (NA) session, the constitutional authority allows the Speaker to convene the session on February 29.
Addressing the media outside the Punjab Assembly, Dar emphasized the constitutional mandate requiring the National Assembly session to be called within 21 days from the general election date, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
He extended this principle to provincial assemblies, stating that if a governor fails to summon a provincial assembly session, similar procedures can be followed.
Dar refrained from delving into economic strategy intricacies during his media interaction, suggesting that such discussions are better suited for more appropriate forums. Meanwhile, sources have indicated that President Alvi is reportedly delaying the signing of a summary to convene the National Assembly session.
It is reported that the summary was dispatched to the president, but Alvi is asserting authority to delay the process by up to 15 days, citing his interpretation of constitutional provisions.
Insiders familiar with the matter revealed that the president had been briefed on the constitutional imperative to convene the National Assembly by February 29. In related developments, PPP nominee Syed Owais Shah was elected as the 18th speaker of the Sindh Assembly.
The election, held through a secret ballot under the now-former speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, saw 147 members casting their votes. Nine PTI-aligned members and one Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker did not participate.
PPP’s Anthony Naveed was elected as deputy speaker, becoming the first deputy speaker from a minority group in the provincial legislature. The recent swearing-in of new faces in the Sindh Assembly followed the general election results.
