The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) successfully thwarted an attempt to sabotage the February 8 elections by apprehending two potential suicide bombers.
The operation targeted individuals planning to attack Jamiat Ulema–e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Awami National Party’s (ANP) leader Aimal Wali Khan.
During a press conference, CTD Superintendent of Police Najam-ul-Hussain announced the arrest of two suspected suicide bombers affiliated with Daesh Khorasan in the Matni area. The terrorists had planned suicide attacks on key political figures, including Fazlur Rehman and Aimal Wali Khan.
Investigations revealed that the arrested individuals visited the JUI-F’s center and received training in the Paktia region of Afghanistan. The security operation resulted in the recovery of suicide jackets, three hand grenades, and Daesh-related propaganda material. The bomb disposal unit successfully neutralized the weapons and explosive devices.
The outlawed organization had previously been linked to targeted killings in the region six months ago, targeting individuals representing various schools of thought.
Additionally, authorities are making progress in identifying the person responsible for planting a bomb on Warsak Road. The arrest of the terrorist involved in the Warsak Road bomb blast is said to be imminent.
It’s worth noting that last month, the JUI-F chief’s convoy was fired upon from multiple sides in Dera Ismail Khan’s Yarik interchange. Fortunately, he remained unhurt in the attack.
