Police Order
LAHORE: During a session on Friday, a sessions court directed a petitioner to furnish a copy of the police order declining to register a case against Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for wearing a police uniform.
The hearing, presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge Muzaffar Nawaz Malik, addressed the petition filed by Waqar Ahmed, who contested the non-registration of a case against the chief minister for donning a police uniform at a policewomen’s passing out ceremony.
Advocate Aftab Ahmad Bajwa, representing the petitioner, contended that the Station House Officer (SHO) of Old Anarkali refused to initiate a case against the chief minister, citing the presence of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other senior police officials at the event as justification.
In response, the judge instructed the petitioner to present a copy of the police officer’s refusal order by April 29.
Previously, the petitioner’s counsel argued that the chief minister’s wearing of the police uniform at the policewomen’s passing out event violated the law, which prohibits individuals from wearing the uniform of any institution without being an employee of it.
He asserted that the chief minister had committed a punishable offense, and the police were obligated to register a case against her and the officials who shared the stage with her.
The petitioner urged the court to compel the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the chief minister based on his application.
The court’s directive signals a judicial inquiry into the matter, seeking clarification on the police’s decision not to pursue a case against Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her actions.
The outcome of this legal proceeding will shed light on the interpretation and enforcement of relevant laws concerning the wearing of official uniforms by non-employees, potentially setting a precedent for similar cases in the future.
