SUKKUR: A Chinese company working on the Indus Highway in Kashmore-Kandhkot has reportedly received an extortion demand from a notorious dacoit.
The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, the firm handling the project, promptly informed the Sindh government about the threat through an official letter.
The letter detailed that the bandit, identified as Budhal, contacted the company’s project manager via phone and issued a series of demands.
These included a sum of Rs5 million, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle. Alongside these demands, the bandit also issued threats to harm the workers if his conditions were not met.
In response to the situation, the Chinese company alerted the local law enforcement agencies, including the SSP Kashmore and the Deputy Commissioner, seeking intervention.
However, the firm expressed dissatisfaction with the local administration’s efforts to ensure the security of the workers and the project site. The letter criticized the authorities for their failure to provide adequate protection to the company and its staff, despite the evident risks.
This incident comes amidst growing concerns over the safety of Chinese nationals and companies working in Pakistan.
Recently, Chinese engineers were attacked near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport in a tragic terrorist incident. The suicide attack resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals and injured several others.
Investigations into the Karachi attack revealed significant details about the assailant. Authorities identified the suicide bomber as Shah Fahad using two of his fingers recovered from the explosion site. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) confirmed his identity.
Further inquiries disclosed that Fahad, accompanied by two accomplices, arrived in Karachi on December 3, 2023.
The group checked into a hotel in the city’s Preedy area at 7:49 p.m. Their movements and planning culminated in the devastating attack on the convoy of Chinese engineers near the airport.
These incidents underscore the pressing need for enhanced security measures to safeguard foreign nationals and projects, particularly those involving key international partners like China.
