Rs600 Billion
The federal cabinet, in its session on Tuesday, rejected the Power Division’s proposal to collect Rs600 billion annually, as revealed by sources familiar with the matter. The cabinet dismissed the suggested measures to withhold identity card and passport issuance and renewal for electricity defaulters, along with restrictions on their ability to travel abroad and open bank accounts.
Instead, the cabinet instructed the Power Division to present a comprehensive plan with clear objectives. The proposal to involve officers from the Armed Forces, Intelligence Agency, and FIA was also turned down, with cabinet members emphasizing the higher priorities of these entities over the power sector.
Furthermore, the cabinet expressed concerns over the failure of distribution companies to appoint permanent chief executive officers over the past 25 years. They criticized the Power Division’s recommendations, particularly the establishment of a performance management unit, deeming it likely to lead to legal and political challenges.
In a related development, sources confirmed the Federal Cabinet’s approval for the removal of Ali Raza from the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Pakistan Software Export Board. It was revealed that Ali Raza’s appointment lacked security clearance, and despite two attempts to secure approval from the intelligence agency, it was not obtained. The Ministry of Information Technology had submitted a summary for his appointment, which was reportedly the basis for approval.
This decision highlights the government’s scrutiny of appointments and policies within various sectors, signaling a commitment to address issues and ensure transparency in governance.
