British Journalist
ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, Pakistan has reportedly deported British journalist Charles Glass, who had arrived in the country with the intention of meeting former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
According to sources, the authorities took Glass to the airport from a residence in Islamabad after his visa was abruptly canceled.
Charles Glass, a US-origin British journalist known for his extensive reporting on conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, had sought permission via email from Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to visit Khan.
Glass had informed the minister that despite a court order, he was not granted access to meet Khan in jail. Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been imprisoned for nearly a year.
His detention began on August 5 of the previous year, following his indictment on various charges, including terrorism and corruption. Khan has consistently denied all allegations against him.
The timing of Glass’s deportation is notable, occurring just four days after he disclosed that he had been barred from visiting Khan in prison.
Glass had arrived in Islamabad last week with the stated purpose of meeting Khan as a friend, rather than in a professional or activist capacity.
His visit was intended to support Khan amidst the political turmoil that has gripped Pakistan since Khan’s ouster from office in a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
Earlier this year, on World Press Freedom Day in May, Glass wrote an article advocating for the release of both Julian Assange and Imran Khan, suggesting that their imprisonment was a consequence of defying US interests.
Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, was released from the UK’s high-security Belmarsh prison on June 25 after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges related to disclosing classified US government documents.
Charles Glass, who has authored several books including Soldiers Don’t Go Mad: A Story of Brotherhood, Poetry, and Mental Illness During the First World War, is recognized for his deep insights into conflict zones and has been a prominent figure in journalism for over 45 years.
