Turkey has appointed Burhan Kiroglu as the interim chargé d’affaires at its embassy in Damascus, marking the first such appointment in years.
The Turkish embassy in Damascus has been inactive since its closure on March 26, 2012, amid the escalating Syrian civil war and Turkey’s call for President Bashar al-Assad to step down. This decision followed the outbreak of the conflict in 2011, which led to significant security concerns.
Reports indicate that the exact timeline for Kiroglu to officially assume his duties remains unclear.
In remarks to international media, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted Ankara’s intention to reopen its embassy in Damascus when conditions permit, particularly following a potential resolution to the Assad regime’s leadership.
