The Supreme Court of Pakistan today upheld the victory of PML-N MNAs after recounting of votes in three constituencies of the National Assembly.
The Supreme Court has accepted the appeals of PML-N candidates and Azhar Qayyum, Abdul Rehman Kanjo, and Zulfiqar Ahmed have been reinstated.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, delivered its judgment on the recount of votes in three National Assembly constituencies on Monday. Justice Aqeel Abbasi disagreed with the decision while the other two upheld the decision.
The decision addressed appeals related to the recounting of votes in NA-154 Lodhran, NA-81 Gujranwala, and NA-79 Gujranwala.
These appeals emerged from concerns about the integrity of the voting process in these constituencies during the recent general elections.
The concerns were significant enough to prompt legal challenges regarding the accuracy and fairness of the vote counts in the specified areas.
The Supreme Court’s involvement followed an appeal for recounting votes in NA-81 Gujranwala.
The appellant, Azhar Qayyum Nahra, had contested the results of the February 8 elections, where he lost to independent candidate Chaudhry Bilal Ejaz.
Nahra’s appeal, which led to the Supreme Court proceedings, sought a recount to verify the accuracy of the reported results.
The general elections, held on February 8, were marked by controversy and allegations of electoral malpractice. Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had expressed concerns that the elections did not provide a “level playing field.”
Despite these concerns, independent candidates supported by PTI won a significant number of seats.
The PTI alleged that the elections were rigged and that the government had tampered with the results, a claim which was vehemently denied by the interim setup.
The Supreme Court’s verdict was pivotal in addressing these concerns and determining whether a recount was warranted in the affected constituencies.
The outcome had implications for the credibility of the election results and potentially impacted the political landscape.
