The federal government has raised the price of petrol by Re0.56 per litre for the first fortnight of 2025. This adjustment was announced on New Year’s Eve by the Finance Division, reflecting changes in international market prices over the last fortnight.
According to a notification from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the new price of petrol will be Rs252.66 per litre, up from the previous rate of Rs252.10.
In addition, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs2.96, bringing the new rate to Rs258.34 per litre, up from Rs255.38.

In the previous fortnight, the government had maintained the price of petrol at Rs252.10 per litre while reducing the price of high-speed diesel by Rs3.05 to Rs255.38. Additionally, the prices of kerosene and light diesel were reduced by Rs3.32 and Rs2.78, bringing them to Rs161.66 and Rs148.95 per litre, respectively.
The price hike in petrol will impact private transportation, including cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws, which are largely used by the middle and lower-middle classes for commuting. Meanwhile, the increase in high-speed diesel prices is considered inflationary, as it affects the cost of goods transported by trucks, buses, and trains, as well as agricultural machinery like tractors and tube wells. This, in turn, can drive up the prices of vegetables and other food items.
