ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi informed the National Assembly (NA) on Wednesday that more than 85,000 SIM cards have been blocked for involvement in anti-state activities.
Responding to a call-to-attention notice by Asiya Naz Tanoli regarding the spread of fake news on social media, Mehdi acknowledged that the government had temporarily blocked the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to curb misinformation. He further disclosed that amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are underway to strengthen regulations against fake news.
To combat misinformation, VPN usage has been restricted, and a task force has been established under the Prime Minister’s directive. Mehdi emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the issue, highlighting awareness campaigns being rolled out in universities, colleges, and schools.
Contrasting Pakistan’s approach with global practices, Mehdi stated: “Globally, fake news receives less attention, with a greater emphasis on freedom of expression. However, the government remains proactive in mitigating the impact of misinformation despite the challenges.”
In a related development, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has officially been granted authority to address social media offences. A notification issued by the Ministry of IT announced the annulment of the National Cybercrimes and Investigation Agency’s rules, with its powers transferred back to the FIA Cybercrime Wing.
