ISLAMABAD: The New Gwadar International Airport is scheduled to be inaugurated on December 30, following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, sources have confirmed.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will operate the airport’s first commercial flight, marking a major milestone in enhancing regional connectivity and trade.
Final preparations are in full swing, with a recent five-hour meeting between PIA and the Airports Authority resolving critical operational details. Sources disclosed that PIA is set to deploy staff and install essential equipment, including check-in systems, in the coming days to ensure seamless operations from the outset.
Built with $246 million in Chinese investment, the state-of-the-art facility features a large runway and an advanced terminal capable of accommodating all types of large aircraft. This infrastructure is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting trade and tourism in the region.
As an incentive to support initial operations, the airport will waive all fees for PIA during its first year. This move is aimed at fostering operational stability and encouraging activity at the new hub.
The airport is poised to become a cornerstone of economic development, elevating Gwadar’s status as a key hub for commerce and regional connectivity.
