London High Court Declares Hasan Nawaz Sharif Bankrupt

Hasan Nawaz Sharif

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son, Hasan Nawaz Sharif, has been officially declared bankrupt by London’s High Court. The declaration, documented in court papers, was widely reported by Pakistani media on Sunday.

The case stems from financial disputes involving tax liabilities and other obligations pursued by the United Kingdom’s tax authority, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Hasan, who resides at Flat 17, Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, was named in case No. 694 of 2023. According to the official order published in the UK Gazette, the case was filed on August 25, 2023, with the bankruptcy order formally issued on April 29, 2024. The order came after claims from creditors regarding unpaid dues, leading to his insolvency being confirmed by the court.

The case was brought forward by HMRC, representing the UK government’s interests, with Hasan Nawaz’s legal defense managed by Kaur Maxwell. Under British law, a bankruptcy order is a legal measure that signifies an individual’s inability to settle outstanding debts.

Such an order is a significant legal development and is only made public in the London Gazette after being processed by The Insolvency Service, a government agency handling bankruptcy cases.

The ramifications of this ruling are far-reaching. Once a bankruptcy order is issued, the affected individual is legally prohibited from holding a directorial position or managing any company without specific permission from the court.

Despite this restriction, Hasan Nawaz continues to be listed as a director of several companies operating in the UK. It remains unclear how he intends to address this apparent legal conflict.

The development marks another chapter in the ongoing scrutiny faced by the Sharif family, who have been embroiled in multiple legal and financial controversies over the years.

The ruling also highlights the UK government’s proactive measures in ensuring compliance with tax obligations and financial laws.

Hasan Nawaz’s bankruptcy declaration serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of unresolved tax disputes and financial liabilities.
