Section 144
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad administration has imposed Section 144 in the federal capital for two months, ahead of a potential protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on November 24.
The order was issued by Additional District Magistrate Usman Ashraf, citing concerns over the prevailing law and order situation and the possibility of unlawful assemblies and public disorder.
According to the notification, the ban prohibits all public gatherings of five or more individuals, including processions, rallies, and demonstrations.
It also highlights specific concerns over planned religious and political demonstrations, emphasizing the need to maintain public safety and security in the current environment.
The restriction applies to all public places within Islamabad’s revenue limits, including the sensitive Red Zone area, which houses key government buildings, diplomatic missions, and other critical installations.
The authorities stated that even after the two-month period ends, any ongoing investigations, legal proceedings, or penalties resulting from violations of the order will remain enforceable.
This move comes in anticipation of PTI’s countrywide demonstration, with Islamabad identified as a focal point for the protest.
PTI’s founder, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has called on his supporters to march to Islamabad, urging full participation from the party’s leadership.
According to Khan’s lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, the demonstration is not limited to Islamabad; it will also extend to other cities in Pakistan and international locations where PTI supporters reside.
PTI has outlined four demands: repealing the 26th Constitutional Amendment, restoring democracy and the Constitution, returning the public’s mandate, and releasing “innocent political prisoners.”
To organize the march, Imran Khan has reportedly formed a special committee, but its members remain unnamed due to concerns over potential arrests.
Imran Khan has been detained since August 2023 on various charges, including corruption and terrorism. Despite his incarceration, the party remains resolute in mobilizing support and pressing its demands.
The imposition of Section 144 underscores the government’s concerns over maintaining order in the face of growing political tensions.
