Imran Khan
RAWALPINDI: Incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and several senior party leaders have been implicated in a “triple murder case” involving the deaths of three Rangers personnel during the opposition’s “do-or-die” protest held last month.
The protest, aimed at securing Imran Khan’s release, culminated in violent clashes between law enforcement and PTI supporters, resulting in casualties on both sides.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Islamabad’s Ramna Police Station, alleging that the incident stemmed from a premeditated plan orchestrated within Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan has been held for over a year.
The FIR states that the deaths of the paramilitary personnel occurred “at the behest of the PTI founder” and were corroborated by inmates and undercover police employees stationed at the jail.
The FIR also names a number of senior PTI leaders as co-accused, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Salman Akram Raja, Murad Saeed, Zulfi Bukhari, Raoof Hasan, and Hammad Azhar, among others.
It alleges that Bushra Bibi and the other accused individuals incited mutiny against the armed forces and the government through a video message, which reportedly led to the tragic incident.
According to the FIR, the deaths occurred when an unidentified individual driving a vehicle rammed into three Rangers personnel who were on security duty at the protest site. The case has been filed under terrorism charges and ten sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The protest, which began as a demonstration demanding Imran Khan’s release, devolved into a violent standoff following a midnight crackdown by the government.
The PTI claims that at least 12 of its workers were killed, and 1,000 were arrested during the operation. However, the government has denied using live ammunition against protesters and reported that four law enforcers, including three Rangers personnel and a policeman, lost their lives in the clashes.
Today’s developments mark a significant escalation in the ongoing standoff between the PTI and the ruling coalition, with both sides trading accusations over the violence.
The government attributes the unrest to PTI’s incitement, while the PTI alleges state-led aggression against its members. The investigation is expected to uncover further details about the events leading to the deaths of the Rangers personnel.
