Imran Khan
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has been arrested in connection with seven new cases linked to the party’s recent protests.
The development adds to Khan’s ongoing legal troubles as he remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The latest cases were brought before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) judge following the completion of Khan’s six-day physical remand in another case.
That case pertained to PTI’s September 28 protest in Rawalpindi’s garrison town, where Khan was accused of inciting a demonstration that turned violent. Notably, the prosecution team did not seek an extension of his physical remand in that case, filed at the New Town police station.
However, during the court proceedings, the Rawalpindi police arrested the PTI chairman in connection with new cases related to protests held on October 5 and November 24, as well as another demonstration in Rawalpindi. These cases allege that Khan’s calls for protests led to violent incidents in various locations.
ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah, who presided over the hearing, did not approve physical remand for Khan in the new cases. Instead, the court sent the former premier on judicial remand for all charges, including those related to the latest protests.
The new cases accuse Khan of encouraging demonstrations that resulted in violence, including a protest in November that saw the loss of lives on both sides.
At least three Rangers personnel and two police officers were martyred during clashes with PTI protesters. Meanwhile, PTI claimed that approximately 20 of its workers were killed in the same incident.
The protest ended abruptly when authorities conducted a late-night crackdown on party members and leaders at Islamabad’s D-Chowk.
Law enforcement agencies reported the arrest of over 1,000 PTI workers during the crackdown, including more than three dozen Afghan nationals.
Security forces also seized tear gas canisters and other forms of ammunition allegedly used during the protests.
This sequence of events underscores escalating tensions between PTI and state authorities as legal and political pressures mount against the party and its leadership.
