ISLAMABAD: The federal government and its coalition allies have decided to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s recent decision favoring the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding the allocation of reserved seats. Addressing a press conference, Federal Minister Atta Tarar criticized the verdict, highlighting significant legal concerns and potential injustices.
The Supreme Court ruled that PTI is eligible for the allocation of reserved seats despite the party not being a direct party to the case. Tarar emphasized that members who benefitted from the decision did not explicitly state their affiliation with PTI. “Everyone submitted Sunni Ittehad Council’s affidavit, but its manifesto says that no non-Muslim member can join the party; hence, they could not get a seat,” he explained.
Tarar asserted that PTI received undue relief without formally requesting it, citing a legal loophole in the judgment. He emphasized the government’s stance on ensuring fairness and justice for all, particularly for women and minorities who have historically faced discrimination. “Keeping in view the legal loophole in this judgment, the government and its allies have decided to file a review petition,” Tarar announced.
The decision to file a review petition underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the legal process and ensuring that all political parties and their members are treated fairly. This move is expected to ignite further debate and scrutiny of the Supreme Court’s ruling and its implications for Pakistan’s electoral system.
By challenging the Supreme Court’s decision, the government aims to address perceived legal oversights and advocate for equitable representation in reserved seats. The outcome of this review petition will be closely watched as it could have significant ramifications for the country’s political landscape and the treatment of minority groups within the political arena.
