Ex-Spymaster Faiz Hamid’s Trial Expected to Conclude Within Weeks, Lawyer Reveals

Faiz Hamid’s Trial

ISLAMABAD: The military trial of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General, Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hamid, is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, according to his lawyer, Barrister Mian Ali Ashfaq. Barrister Ashfaq confirmed that he, along with his two associates, is representing General Faiz in the ongoing military trial.

When questioned about whether General Faiz might become an approver in the case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, Ashfaq remained cautious, stating that he could not confirm any such development due to the confidential nature of the trial, which is governed by the Official Secrets Act.

Despite numerous media reports suggesting the commencement of the trial, Ashfaq did not deny its initiation, saying he had seen the reports but was not in a position to confirm or deny them.

Regarding the potential timeline for the conclusion of the trial, Ashfaq stated that while he could not predict an exact date, it is likely to conclude within a few weeks.

The lawyer also addressed a previous report, which indicated that Faiz Hamid had strongly denied any involvement in guiding or assisting PTI.

Ashfaq reaffirmed that Faiz’s position on the matter remained unchanged, emphasizing that his post-retirement political interactions were merely routine social exchanges.

Faiz Hamid has been formally charged with several offenses by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), including engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, and misusing his authority.

According to the ISPR, these actions have been detrimental to the state’s security and interests. Additionally, Faiz’s involvement in the political unrest surrounding the May 9, 2023, events is under investigation.

The ISPR has alleged that Faiz played a role in fomenting instability in collaboration with vested political interests, further complicating the charges against him.

As the trial progresses, Faiz Hamid’s legal team remains focused on defending his actions, while the military authorities continue their scrutiny of his conduct, particularly concerning his alleged involvement in destabilizing events and political interference.

The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for both Faiz’s future and the broader political landscape in Pakistan.
