Court Declares PTI Founder Guilty in May 9 Incidents

PTI Founder

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has declared Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), guilty in connection with the May 9 events, denying him bail in eight separate cases.

The verdict, issued by Judge Manzar Ali Gul, was detailed in a comprehensive six-page written judgment.

The court emphasized that substantial evidence had been presented against Khan, including audio and video recordings of him allegedly encouraging violent actions.

The evidence also included witness testimonies claiming that Khan orchestrated a conspiracy at Zaman Park, where he reportedly prepared for his possible arrest by instructing his supporters to disrupt state operations.

Khan’s legal team argued that he was in detention during the incidents and that bail should be granted, citing precedents where bail had been approved for individuals already under arrest.

However, the court rejected this argument, asserting that the severity of the allegations went beyond conspiracy or incitement.

The prosecution maintained that Khan had actively incited violence against military and government establishments, urging his party leaders and supporters to carry out his directives.

They further alleged that undercover police officers, disguised as PTI supporters, overheard conversations revealing the details of the conspiracy, which reportedly took place at Zaman Park on May 7 and May 9.

The court also referenced a Lahore High Court decision regarding the bail granted to Ijaz Chaudhry, highlighting Imran Khan’s pivotal role in the conspiracy.

The defense’s claim that the prosecution failed to provide specific details about the conspiracy’s date, time, and venue was dismissed, as the court determined that sufficient evidence confirmed the planning dates.

In its ruling, the court underscored the influence Khan wielded over his followers, emphasizing that his directives were followed without question, leading to violent actions.

These included attacks on police personnel, as well as assaults on military and government properties, particularly during the unrest observed on May 11.

The decision marks a significant legal setback for Khan, further intensifying the scrutiny surrounding his political career and the events of May 9.
