Bangladesh Army
In a significant overhaul, the Bangladesh Army has implemented widespread appointments and transfers, marking a major shake-up within its ranks.
According to a statement from the Bangladesh Army’s media wing, Major General Zia-ul-Ahsan has been dismissed from his position, signaling a considerable shift in the army’s leadership.
Major General Zia Ul Hasan Maliki, who previously served as the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC), an intelligence agency under the Ministry of Interior, has also been replaced.
The NTMC plays a crucial role in monitoring national security, collecting data, and overseeing communications, including emails, social media activity, and phone calls. The new appointment for this position is Major General Ridwan-ur-Rehman, who will take over from Zia-ul-Ahsan.
In the recent military reshuffle, Lt Gen Saif Alam has been moved to the Foreign Ministry, and Lt Gen Mujibur Rehman has been designated as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command. These changes are part of a broader strategic realignment within the army.
This military restructuring comes amid a profound political crisis in Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid fled the country via military helicopter due to escalating student protests.
In her absence, the Army Chief announced the formation of an interim government. Additionally, opposition leader Khaleda Zia was released from jail on presidential orders. Despite these significant political changes, the situation in the country remains tumultuous, with daily life severely disrupted.
Following the resignation and escape of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid, several cabinet members have also begun fleeing the country.
Reports from Indian media indicate that Hasan Mehmood, a close aide to Hasina Wajid and former Foreign Minister, was arrested while attempting to leave the country at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Similarly, former Minister of Information and Broadcasting Junaid Ahmed Palak was detained at Dhaka Airport while trying to flee to New Delhi.
Amidst this political upheaval, protesters have targeted the Indian Cultural Center in Dhaka, setting it ablaze.
The Indira Gandhi Cultural Center, operated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, was established in 2010 to foster cultural ties between Bangladesh and India. The attack on the center was part of the broader unrest following the political developments.
Footage from the scene shows the cultural center in disarray, with debris scattered and smoke rising from the building. Among the debris was a pile of video cassettes, including one titled “Pakistan – The War Within,” which was released by the External Publicity Wing of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
The video, 30 minutes in length, was notably related to Pakistan, highlighting the contentious nature of the ongoing protests and political tensions in the region.
