Asif Zardari Takes Oath as 14th President Of Pakistan

Asif Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari, Co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), assumed the role of the 14th President of Pakistan in a significant swearing-in ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Sunday.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa administered the oath to the newly-elected president, marking the commencement of his tenure as the head of state.

The event garnered prominent attendees, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, outgoing President Arif Alvi, the three service chiefs, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza.

Governors from all four provinces, chief ministers, and foreign diplomats were also present, adding to the ceremonial significance of the occasion.

As the joint candidate of the ruling alliance, Zardari secured a resounding victory on the previous day, defeating Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate.

With support from allied parties, primarily the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Zardari obtained 411 electoral votes in parliament and all four provincial assemblies.

His opponent, Achakzai, managed to secure the majority of votes only in the PTI-backed SIC-dominated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

Zardari’s victory marks his second term as president, having previously served from 2008 to 2013. Born in 1955, Zardari, who received education and upbringing in Karachi, was married to Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s former prime minister and the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Zardari’s ascent to the presidency follows the completion of Dr. Arif Alvi’s five-year term in September 2023.

This political transition underscores Zardari’s enduring influence and the continued impact of the PPP in Pakistan’s political landscape.

As the nation ushers in a new presidential term, Zardari assumes the responsibility of steering the country through its socio-political challenges.
