Balochistan CM Announces Measures to Depoliticize Police and Enhance Security

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Mir Sarfraz Bugti has announced a comprehensive plan to depoliticize the police and levies force, aiming to strengthen their capability in ensuring citizen protection and upholding the rule of law across the province.

In a directive to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from the floor of the assembly, Bugti emphasized the appointment of Superintendents of Police (SPs), District Police Officers (DPOs), and Station House Officers (SHOs) based on merit. He suggested calling police officers from other provinces to serve in Balochistan if necessary. He assured that no assembly member or politician would interfere in police affairs or request postings for favored officers.

Addressing the Provincial Assembly, CM Bugti stated that police officers’ tenures would be maintained unless they violated the privileges of parliamentarians or the dignity of the common man. “We are depoliticizing and providing a free environment, and will also ensure accountability in the police department,” he added.

The chief minister highlighted plans to equip the police with modern tools and facilities, prioritizing crime prevention. He directed the IGP to collaborate with the Levies force to launch operations against organized crime and ensure security on national highways to combat lawlessness.

Bugti also addressed the ongoing terrorism challenges, attributing them to an organized campaign driven by RAW, targeting both the country and the province. He called for a special debate session and an in-camera briefing on terrorism in the Provincial Assembly.

He condemned the actions of terrorists involved in the killing of over 4,000 innocent people, extorting mine owners, and torturing locals. Bugti warned against digital terrorists spreading fake propaganda to create rifts between state institutions and the public. He assured that peaceful protests would be facilitated, designating Hockey Chawk Quetta for such activities to prevent disruption in the city.

Regarding the planned protest in Gwadar on July 28, Bugti highlighted potential threats to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and local stability. He reported serious intelligence threats from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining order and preventing any group from challenging state authority.

In recent security actions, police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials arrested individuals involved in the martyrdom of Khuzdar Press Club president Maulana Sadiq and the murder of Aslam Umrani in Naseerabad.

CM Bugti reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring a peaceful and prosperous Balochistan, emphasizing the proper use of development funds to overcome the region’s backwardness.
