Arrest of army officers is an internal matter of Pakistan: Pentagon spokesperson

The United States has addressed recent reports concerning the arrest of military officers in Pakistan, stating that it views the situation as an internal matter for Pakistan to handle.

Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh commented on the issue during a weekly briefing, acknowledging the reports and reaffirming Washington’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Pakistan. She emphasized that “this is really a Pakistani internal matter for them to speak to.”

Singh highlighted that the longstanding partnership between the U.S. and Pakistan remains solid, with ongoing engagement between the military and political leadership of both countries on issues of mutual interest. “As you know, the U.S. values our partnership with Pakistan,” she said, adding that discussions continue with both military and civilian leaders based on shared concerns.

Singh also underscored the United States’ dedication to collaborating with Pakistan, particularly in areas related to regional security and shared objectives. “We will continue to help Pakistan achieve regional security and common goals,” she affirmed, noting that U.S. assistance and cooperation with Pakistan remain a priority.

On August 12, former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed was placed under military custody as disciplinary action was initiated against him. The Pakistan Army has begun Field General Court Martial (FGCM) proceedings to address the charges brought against the retired officer.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a detailed court of inquiry was conducted by the Pakistan Army, following the Supreme Court’s orders, to investigate complaints against Hameed in the Top City Case. “Consequently, appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd), under provisions of the Pakistan Army Act,” the statement added.

Additionally, the ISPR reported that multiple violations of the Pakistan Army Act by Hameed post-retirement have been established. “The process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated, and Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) has been taken into military custody,” the statement continued.

Furthermore, on Friday, three more retired army officers were taken into custody as the court martial proceedings against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed continued.

According to the ISPR, this move is part of a broader investigation into actions considered to be breaches of military discipline.
