Army Officer Arrested in Islamabad For Killing Pro-Palestine Protesters

Army Officer

In a tragic incident that unfolded this week in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, two pro-Palestine protesters lost their lives after being struck by a car.

The driver, identified as an army officer, has been apprehended by the Islamabad police and subsequently handed over to military authorities for further legal proceedings.

The protesters had assembled at the D-Chowk area of Islamabad, where they had been staging demonstrations for several days in solidarity with Palestine.

However, on Monday, tragedy struck when a speeding car careened into the crowd, resulting in the deaths of two protesters and injuries to four others. Although the driver attempted to flee, swift action by law enforcement led to his prompt arrest at the scene.

Taqi Jawad, a spokesman for the Islamabad police, confirmed the driver’s military affiliation and stated that he had been formally named in the police report (FIR). Subsequently, the military police have assumed jurisdiction over the case for further legal proceedings.

Despite the tragic loss, the spirit of the protesters remains resilient, as they have vowed to persist with their demonstrations. They continue to call upon the Pakistani government to take more robust actions in support of the Palestinian cause.

Lawyer Humaira Masihuddin emphasized the urgency for Pakistan to amplify its efforts, stating, “We feel that the State of Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan should do far more than it has been doing till now.”

Pakistan’s steadfast stance against Israel is reflected in its non-recognition of the state and its consistent advocacy for Palestinian rights on the global stage, particularly at the United Nations.

However, criticism has emerged regarding the government’s perceived failure to ensure adequate security measures for protests, particularly in Islamabad’s highly fortified Red Zone area.

Student Rabail Shahid echoed these concerns, highlighting the need for enhanced security provisions to safeguard demonstrators participating in the protests.
