Veteran diplomat Amna Baloch has been appointed as Pakistan’s 33rd Foreign Secretary, succeeding Syrus Sajjad Qazi, who retired after a distinguished career. The Foreign Office announced Baloch’s new role on Wednesday.
Baloch, a Grade-22 officer in the Foreign Service of Pakistan, was appointed to the position last week. She is the second woman to hold this role, following Tehmina Janjua. Throughout her career, Baloch has held several key positions both in Islamabad and at various international missions. Notably, she served as Consul General in Chengdu, China from 2014 to 2017, High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2019 to 2023, and Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg from 2023 to 2024. Additionally, she has worked as a Minister Counsellor in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Baloch, who holds a master’s degree in history and joined the Foreign Service in 1991, has also served as a joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and an additional secretary in the Foreign Minister’s Office.
In a farewell reception for Qazi, held the day before his retirement, Baloch expressed appreciation for his leadership and contributions over his 34-year career. She commended his professionalism, insight, and warm demeanor. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also praised Qazi, highlighting his sharp intellect, commitment, and adherence to transparency and ethical governance. Dar noted Qazi’s deep understanding of Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities and national interests.
