Actress Maisa Hadi arrested for her social media posts against Gaza bombing

A leading Arab-Israel actress Maisa Hadi has been arrested for her social media post related to Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel.

Maisa Abdel Hadi, who resides in the northern Israeli city of Nazareth, was taken into custody on Monday. Hadi is expected to remain in detention until Thursday.

She is among a growing number of Arab Israelis who have faced detention due to their social media posts discussing the ongoing conflict.

Hadi allegedly shared an image depicting a bulldozer breaching the fence separating the Gaza Strip and Israel during the October 7 attack by Hamas, the Islamist militant group.

Israel contends that this attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people, while the Hamas government in Gaza claims that more than 5,000 individuals have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the coastal territory.

In her caption, she wrote, “Let’s go Berlin-style,” alluding to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which had divided Germany.

Her attorney, Jaafar Farah, who also serves as the director of the human rights association Mousawat, explained that she is accused of supporting terrorism. Maisa Abdel Hadi, aged 37, is known for her roles in various series, films, and plays.

Additionally, Arab Israeli singer Dalal Abu Amneh was briefly detained this week due to one of her social media posts.

According to reports from rights campaigners and Israeli police, members of Israel’s Arab minority and Palestinians in East Jerusalem have faced job terminations, college expulsions, and arrests over comments expressing solidarity with Gaza residents since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
