ISLAMABAD: It seems to be shocking and unbelievable in our society, but it is a fact that in three years of PTI government, nearly 29,000 Pakistani youngsters have applied for surgery to change their sex-status.
According to data of the Ministry of Interior, from 2018 to 2021 (so far), about 28,700 Pakistani youngsters, boys and girls, have submitted their applications for change in their gender through surgical operations.

Interior Ministry has shared this shocking data with the Senate, wherein, the Senate was informed that 28,700 people sought sex change surgery during the PTI government’s rule.

Ministry says that the citizens apply for gender change on medical grounds. Interior Ministry told Senate that in three years of PTI rule, (from 2018 to 2021), 16,500 boys/men applied for change in their gender to girls/women, while 12,150 women sought gender reassignment to boys/men. Interestingly, only 21 boys sought surgery to become transgender.
Changing gender in Pakistan, appears to be a tough task because of certain social taboos. However, thousands of youngers seeking change in their gender status on permanent basis indicates that a generation is emerging in Pakistan rapidly with willful change in their gender through surgery and not just in official record.
