ISLAMABAD: The investigation into the death of Laiba, a young student who allegedly died by suicide after falling victim to an overseas education scam, has taken a new turn after authorities uncovered her prime suspect’s brother’s alleged involvement in fraud.
According to ARY News, the suspect’s brother, Waqas, is currently detained at Mansehra jail in connection with a separate fraud case. Investigators have reportedly found that Waqas and his brother, Noman, allegedly worked with accomplices to deceive people and extract money through fraudulent schemes.
Investigators also discovered that Noman allegedly impersonated an assistant director of an intelligence agency in Mansehra. Fake appointment letters bearing the agency’s name reportedly surfaced during interrogation.
Following these revelations, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched an investigation into the separate Mansehra fraud case to establish the suspects’ alleged activities and identify other victims.
Laiba, a 20-year-old student associated with the International Islamic University Islamabad, was found dead near a green belt close to Itwar Bazaar in Islamabad’s Ramna police station jurisdiction.
According to police, she had allegedly paid an agent Rs5 million to arrange travel to the United States but later discovered that the documents provided to her were fake.
Police said she experienced severe mental distress after learning about the alleged fraud. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and examining the suspect’s role.
Officials said further details would emerge after the post-mortem report and completion of the investigation.
