The Punjab government has launched a multimillion-dollar modernisation project for the 131-year-old Lahore Museum with support from UNESCO. The initiative aims to upgrade the historic institution according to international museum standards.
Officials said the project will improve the preservation and presentation of the museum’s rare collections. Additionally, visitors will benefit from enhanced digital features and upgraded facilities.
The modernisation plan includes QR-based audio guides and interactive digital displays. Moreover, authorities will fully digitise the museum’s valuable artifacts.
Project Focuses On Preservation
The project also includes major structural improvements across the museum. Workers will waterproof the roof and upgrade the drainage system.
Furthermore, officials will enhance the museum’s climate-control system. These upgrades will regulate temperature and humidity to better protect delicate and rare artifacts.
Authorities also plan structural restoration throughout the building. In addition, they will construct a new connecting block through an underground tunnel.
Contractors Invited For Project
The Punjab government has invited prequalification applications from eligible contractors. Applicants must meet the required Pakistan Engineering Council category and other prescribed standards.
Officials set August 25, 2026, as the application deadline. However, contractors must submit applications through the Punjab government’s e-procurement system.
The project marks a significant step toward preserving one of Pakistan’s oldest museums while improving the visitor experience through modern technology.
