Lahore is set to welcome a new electric tram service following the success of electric buses across Punjab, aiming to provide efficient and environmentally friendly public transportation to city residents.
The electric tram will operate on a route stretching from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig, marking a significant step forward in Lahore’s urban transit infrastructure. Authorities have taken measures to integrate the tram smoothly with the existing traffic flow, including plans to streamline underpasses along Canal Road by consolidating them into a single lane. Additionally, the Jail Road underpass will be relocated from the left to the right side of the road to further improve traffic management.
The tram will run on the extreme left side of Canal Road, designed to minimize disruption to regular traffic. To accommodate the tram and ensure smooth passenger boarding and alighting, the road width near bus stops will be expanded accordingly. The Transport Department is rigorously reviewing various technical and logistical aspects of the tram route to guarantee operational efficiency and feasibility.
In parallel, discussions are underway for constructing an underground road linking Jallo to Harbanspura, which aims to enhance connectivity and ease congestion within the city.
The electric tram, imported from China, arrived in Lahore recently and consists of three interconnected units powered entirely by electricity. A key feature of the tram is its fast-charging capability; just 10 minutes of charging can provide enough power to cover 25 to 27 kilometers. The tram can accommodate up to 250 passengers at a time, making it a practical solution for Lahore’s growing population and transport needs.
Operating like a subway system but on surface roads, the tram is currently undergoing a pilot test near Lahore Airport. The Public Relations Officer confirmed that the tram was assembled at the Ali Town Depot and will initially be launched as a pilot project.
To encourage ridership and collect user feedback, the tram service will be offered free of charge during the trial phase. If the pilot proves successful, ticket prices will be introduced for regular service operations.
This innovative project represents a forward-thinking approach to modernizing Lahore’s public transport, promising reduced emissions and improved commuter experience in one of Pakistan’s largest cities.
