LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the implementation of Lahore’s first-ever tram service, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transport evolution. This initiative aims to enhance urban aesthetics and offer residents a convenient and efficient mode of transportation through Lahore’s bustling city center.
The tram service will feature an 11-kilometer route connecting prominent locations including Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road. With stops approximately every 1 to 1.5 kilometers, the tram is designed to facilitate easy access to key areas of Lahore.
The tram’s modern design draws inspiration from successful systems in Finland and China, promising a comfortable and stylish travel experience. Beyond functionality, the project emphasizes improving Lahore’s visual appeal. The Lahore Development Authority plans to revamp MM Alam Road, incorporating uniform roads and tuff tiles to create an aesthetically cohesive streetscape.
The scope of the project extends to comprehensive improvements in Gulberg and neighboring areas, ensuring the tram service integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure. Additionally, Chief Minister Punjab has approved the development of a signal-free corridor stretching from Kareem Block to the Motorway, which is expected to significantly enhance traffic management in the city.
While the official launch date for the tram service has not been announced, the government has committed to the swift completion of the project to maximize benefits for residents. Ticket pricing details will be finalized closer to the service’s launch.
This development underscores Lahore’s growing reputation as a center of innovation and progress, setting the stage for a more efficient and visually appealing public transportation network.
