Lahore will celebrate Basant for 10 days from January 29 to February 7, 2027, with a break on February 5 for Kashmir Day. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the revised schedule on Wednesday and directed departments to begin preparations early.
Lahore previously hosted Basant from February 6 to 8 this year after an 18-year ban. Authorities imposed the ban in 2007 after dangerous kite strings and celebratory gunfire caused deaths and serious injuries.
Government Plans Expanded Basant Celebrations
According to a government statement, Maryam Nawaz called the festival a gift for Lahore’s residents as they welcome 2027. She said the event would showcase Punjab’s cultural heritage and Lahore’s centuries-old traditions.
The chief minister also directed authorities to improve arrangements for public safety and convenience compared with the previous celebration. Moreover, she urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and follow safety regulations throughout the extended festivities.
Authorities To Focus On Public Safety
Maryam Nawaz instructed relevant departments to complete preparations well in advance and prevent the celebrations from compromising public safety. She also stressed that responsible public behaviour would play an important role in ensuring a safe event.
The government previously introduced new rules for kite-flying during next year’s Basant festival. These regulations aim to address safety concerns while allowing residents to participate in the cultural celebration.
Meanwhile, the latest schedule revises an earlier announcement made by Maryam Nawaz in August. At that time, she had announced that Basant would take place from March 12 to 14, 2027.
Under the new plan, festivities will run from January 29 through February 7, except February 5. Authorities will suspend celebrations that day to observe Kashmir Day before resuming the festival afterward.
