In a disturbing turn of events, police officers on protocol duty in Lahore’s Dharampura prevented a father from throwing his three children off a bridge, rescuing the minors just in time and handing them over to the Child Protection Bureau.
The incident occurred while security personnel were stationed along the protocol route of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who was set to pass through the Dharampura underpass shortly. As officers monitored the area, they noticed the man attempting to throw his children off the bridge and intervened immediately, detaining him before any harm could occur.
The Chief Minister was visiting the area to inspect the implementation of a ban on swimming in the canal.
The suspect was identified as Tasawwar Abbas, a resident of Jhang.
According to police, Abbas’s wife had recently left him due to his drug addiction and unemployment, leaving him the sole caregiver for the children. Authorities believe he attempted the heinous act under the pretext of being unable to support them.
A case of attempted murder has been registered against Abbas. The rescued children—a three-year-old daughter and two sons aged six and ten—have been placed in the custody of the Child Protection Bureau to ensure their safety and well-being.
The police’s swift action has been widely praised for preventing a potential tragedy and ensuring the children were brought to safety.
