LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken decisive action, ordering fines on cafes that operate beyond stipulated hours in residential areas. Justice Shahid Karim issued these directives during the hearing of petitions filed against inadequate measures to control smog, with a specific focus on cafes staying open late into the night.
In the course of proceedings, a member of the Judicial Water and Environment Commission pointed out a significant number of cafes in the Johar Town area were operating beyond the specified time. The assistant commissioner of Model Town also reported delays in enforcing the closure of these cafes.

Expressing serious concern, the court ordered the imposition of fines as a deterrent. For an initial offense, a fine of Rs 200,000 was mandated, escalating to Rs 500,000 for a second violation. The court went further, ruling that a cafe found in violation for the third time should be sealed.
In addition to addressing the cafe-related issues, the court directed the immediate restoration of MA College grounds. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for January 26.
This action comes in the context of a previous court directive mandating the closure of cafes by 10 pm. The measure aims to address concerns related to noise, disturbances, and other issues in residential areas, ensuring a balance between commercial activities and the quality of life for residents. The court’s proactive approach reflects an effort to maintain civic order and uphold community standards.
