The Lahore High Court (LHC), during hearings on smog prevention measures, has issued a firm directive prohibiting any tree cutting along Canal Road in connection with development projects. The court emphasized the vital environmental role played by the decades-old trees lining this important city route.
The bench warned that cutting down these trees would cause serious environmental harm and reminded authorities that the Supreme Court has already banned tree felling along the Canal.
Regarding the rapid construction of high-rise buildings in the Central Business District (CBD), the court ordered that all such developments strictly comply with international environmental standards. It further mandated the incorporation of rooftop greenery to help preserve ecological balance within the urban landscape.
In addition, the court requested an update on the Punjab government’s Yellow Bus Project. The government’s counsel reported that electric yellow buses are being introduced and surveys for the initiative are currently underway.
While appreciating this step toward cleaner public transport, the court stressed that the project must proceed without causing environmental damage or necessitating tree removal along Canal Road.
Highlighting the urgent need to combat climate change effects, the court declared that no development should be permitted if it threatens the environment or reduces green cover in the city.
