An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has granted bail to Shahrez Khan, nephew of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in connection with the May 9, 2023, riots. The case is linked to the attack on Jinnah House during nationwide protests that erupted after the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder.
The verdict, announced by ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill, allowed Shahrez to secure bail against a surety bond of Rs100,000. His release marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against PTI supporters and leaders arrested during the violent protests.
Arrest and Remand of Shahrez Khan
Shahrez, the son of Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, was arrested by Lahore Police on August 21, 2025, from his mother’s residence. His brother, Shershah Khan, faced arrest the following day on similar charges. Both were accused of inciting party workers during the riots.
Shahrez was placed on 14-day judicial remand on August 30 after being sent to jail. His arrest came more than two years after the protests, raising questions about its timing and intent.
Defense Arguments in Court
During the bail hearing, Shahrez’s counsel argued that there was no evidence against him. The investigation reportedly involved geo-fencing and other methods, but his name was not mentioned in the official challan. No investigator identified him as a suspect.
The defense highlighted that Shahrez was in Chitral on May 9, 2023. Multiple affidavits were submitted to confirm his presence there, and his wife also presented photographs of the trip. Moreover, the triathlete was preparing to travel abroad for an international competition at that time.
His lawyer further claimed that the arrest was politically motivated and aimed at pressuring Imran Khan’s family.
Contradictions and Political Reactions
The government had defended the arrests, stating they were based on credible evidence and not fabricated. However, rights groups raised concerns. Amnesty International described the arrests of PTI workers and relatives of leaders as a political witch-hunt. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan also expressed alarm over the trend of detentions without solid proof.
Adding to the confusion, a video circulated online alleging Shahrez’s involvement in the riots. PTI countered the claim by stating the footage was from a party rally in Kahna on September 21, 2024, not from May 2023.
Background on the May 9 Riots
On May 9, 2023, PTI supporters launched violent demonstrations nationwide after the detention of Imran Khan. The protests resulted in widespread vandalism of state properties, including military installations and government buildings. The Lahore corps commander’s residence, known as Jinnah House, was also attacked.
Following the unrest, authorities launched a massive crackdown against PTI. Thousands of workers and senior leaders were arrested, and many have since faced convictions or disqualification from holding office.
Significance of the Bail Decision
The bail granted to Shahrez Khan may set an important precedent for other cases linked to the May 9 riots. It also highlights the ongoing political and legal challenges faced by PTI, as the party continues to defend its members against allegations of orchestrating violence.
