Runway Operations
In response to the heightened risk posed by seasonal bird migration, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced a temporary closure of the runways at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport for three hours each day.
This measure, which will come into effect from July 1 and remain in place until September 15, 2025, aims to enhance aviation safety during peak bird activity.
According to an official Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the authority, the daily runway closure will be enforced from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
The early morning hours have been identified as a critical window when migratory birds are most active in the vicinity of the airport, significantly increasing the chances of bird strikes that can pose serious risks to aircraft and passengers.
The PAA emphasized that this initiative is a proactive safety measure to prevent such incidents, which have historically led to operational delays, aircraft damage, and, in extreme cases, endangerment of human lives. “This precaution has been taken to avoid potential bird strikes that could endanger flight operations,” the notification stated.
While the daily closure is mandatory, the NOTAM also provides room for operational flexibility in emergency situations. In cases where urgent flight movements are necessary, the runway may still be used at the pilot’s discretion, provided it is deemed safe to do so.
This exception ensures that critical operations such as medical evacuations or emergency landings are not hindered by the temporary restriction.
Airlines operating in and out of Lahore have been informed in advance to adjust their schedules accordingly. Passengers are advised to check with their respective carriers for any changes in flight timings during this period.
The PAA reiterated its commitment to maintaining international safety standards while also balancing the operational needs of the country’s second-busiest airport.
The authority further noted that this seasonal runway closure is a common practice at airports globally located along migratory bird routes and serves as a preventive measure aligned with aviation safety protocols.
This move highlights the importance of environmental factors in air traffic management and underscores the PAA’s efforts to prioritize the safety of both passengers and airline crew while minimizing disruptions.
