Lahore has once again topped IQAir’s global ranking of the most polluted major cities, with unhealthy air recorded on Friday.
The city recorded an AQI of 167 in the morning, ahead of Dhaka at 164 and Cairo at 158. IQAir classified Lahore’s air quality as unhealthy as pollution levels remained elevated.
The Punjab capital was the only Pakistani city among the world’s top 30 most polluted cities. Karachi ranked 34th with an AQI of 69, according to the live ranking available at the time.
PM2.5 Levels Remain A Major Concern
IQAir reported that Lahore’s PM2.5 concentration was 15.2 times higher than the World Health Organisation’s annual guideline value. These fine particles measure 2.5 micrometres or less and can pose serious health risks when exposure continues.
Air pollution has become a major environmental and public health concern in Pakistan, particularly during Lahore’s annual smog season. Vehicular emissions, industrial activity, crop burning and weather conditions contribute to worsening air quality.
Recent IQAir data also shows Lahore continuing to experience severe pollution. Its latest live reading was substantially higher than the AQI reported in Friday morning’s ranking, highlighting how quickly conditions can change.
Government Highlights Efforts Against Pollution
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government was working to address environmental challenges during a televised address to senior officers in Lahore. The government has faced growing pressure to tackle recurring smog and deteriorating air quality.
Meanwhile, IQAir recommended that Lahore residents avoid outdoor exercise and keep windows closed when pollution levels remain high. It also advised wearing masks outdoors and using air purifiers indoors to reduce exposure.
