Anniversary Poster Corrects the ‘La La Hand’
The celebrated musical La La Land is returning to cinemas for its tenth anniversary. However, fans quickly noticed that its famous poster had received a subtle makeover.
The updated artwork still features Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone dancing against the glowing Los Angeles skyline. The romantic setting and their costumes remain unchanged.
The difference is Gosling’s right hand.
In the original poster, his wrist was bent sideways during the dance pose. In the new version, his arm points upward and mirrors Stone’s elegant position.
The adjustment may appear small. However, it corrects a detail that has bothered Gosling for years.
The film’s official social media account revealed the revised image with the playful caption, “A minor adjustment.” The understated announcement immediately attracted attention from fans who remembered Gosling’s earlier comments about the pose.
Gosling Previously Admitted the Pose Haunted Him
Gosling discussed the unusual hand position during a 2024 interview with WSJ. Magazine.
The actor explained that he never expected the photograph to become the film’s main promotional image. He believed the bent wrist weakened the energy of the otherwise memorable dance pose.
Gosling jokingly named the mistake the “La La Hand.”
He also revealed that he had been advised to lift his hand differently during filming. However, he chose the bent position because he thought it looked more natural at the time.
The decision later became difficult to escape. The image appeared on posters, digital advertisements, physical releases and promotional materials around the world.
Gosling said the pose continued to bother him whenever he saw the artwork. The anniversary campaign has now given the actor the correction he once wished he could make.
Fans reacted with amusement after comparing both versions.
Some praised the creative team for remembering Gosling’s comments. Others said the original hand had become an entertaining part of the film’s history and did not require correction.
The updated version keeps nearly every element of the original composition. This makes the change noticeable mainly to viewers already familiar with the celebrated poster.
Award-Winning Musical Returns to Cinemas
Directed by Damien Chazelle, La La Land was originally released in 2016.
The romantic musical follows Sebastian, a jazz pianist played by Gosling, and Mia, an aspiring actress portrayed by Stone. Their relationship develops as they struggle to balance love, ambition and professional opportunity in Los Angeles.
The film became a major critical and commercial success. Its cinematography, original music, choreography and emotional conclusion helped it develop a lasting international following.
Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while Chazelle received the award for Best Director. The film also won Oscars for cinematography and the original song “City of Stars,” among other achievements.
La La Land also became part of one of the most unforgettable moments in Academy Awards history.
During the 2017 ceremony, the film was mistakenly announced as the winner of Best Picture. The error was corrected during the acceptance speeches, and the award was presented to Moonlight.
Despite that dramatic mistake, La La Land remained one of the most celebrated films of its year.
The anniversary theatrical release will begin in the United States on August 16, 2026. AMC listings confirm special tenth-anniversary screenings, including presentations in Dolby Cinema.
The film is scheduled to return to cinemas across the United Kingdom on August 28. A new anniversary trailer has also been released to promote its return to the big screen.
The re-release will allow longtime fans to revisit the musical in cinemas. It may also introduce the film to younger viewers who first discovered it through streaming platforms.
After almost ten years, the story, songs and celebrated dance sequences remain unchanged.
The poster, however, finally has the hand position Ryan Gosling wanted.
