PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said Friday that consultations had taken place over imposing governor’s rule in the province.
Speaking to reporters in Peshawar, Kundi said the Constitution allows governor’s rule in certain circumstances. He also indicated that the possibility remained under discussion.
The governor’s remarks came days before Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned nationwide protest and Islamabad march on September 27.
PTI Prepares for Islamabad March
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recently ruled out governor’s rule in KP. He said the federal government had no intention of taking such a step.
However, Kundi said consultations had taken place regarding the constitutional option. He also criticised the provincial government over its handling of the police force.
Meanwhile, PTI has intensified preparations for its September 27 protest. The party has demanded the release of founder Imran Khan and restoration of what it calls constitutional supremacy.
Authorities have closed or restricted several highways and motorways leading to Islamabad. Additionally, the federal government authorised Rangers deployment in Islamabad and several Punjab districts.
Kundi claimed PTI workers were surrendering to authorities and looking for ways to avoid the protest. He also accused the provincial government of attempting to control the police.
Furthermore, he said KP police personnel receive the lowest salaries among provincial forces. He argued that the government should improve their benefits instead of seeking greater control.
