Twenty-five China-made buses reach Karachi Port as government prepares to increase Peshawar BRT fleet from 244 to 296 vehicles

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has purchased 52 new buses to expand the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fleet and provide improved public transportation facilities to commuters across the provincial capital.

Of the newly purchased vehicles, 25 buses have already arrived at Karachi Port after being transported from China. Meanwhile, authorities said the remaining 27 buses have also left China and will reach Pakistan as part of the same fleet expansion programme.

The provincial government plans to integrate all the new vehicles into the existing Peshawar BRT network after completing the necessary procedures.

BRT Fleet to Increase to 296 Buses

Currently, the Peshawar BRT system operates a fleet of 244 buses serving passengers across its routes.

Once authorities introduce all 52 additional vehicles into regular service, the total fleet will rise to 296 buses, significantly increasing the system’s passenger-handling capacity.

Moreover, the expansion will allow transport authorities to deploy additional buses where passenger demand remains high and potentially reduce pressure on existing services during busy periods.

The government expects the larger fleet to provide commuters with more travel options and improve the overall efficiency of public transportation in Peshawar.

New Buses Aim to Improve Commuter Services

The latest procurement comes as the provincial government continues exploring ways to expand and strengthen mass transit services.

Furthermore, authorities have been considering broader transport initiatives, including proposals to extend BRT-style connectivity beyond existing routes and improve links for commuters travelling between different areas.

The arrival of the first batch at Karachi Port marks an important step towards putting the additional vehicles into operation.

Meanwhile, the remaining buses will join the fleet after arriving from China and completing transportation and operational requirements.

With 296 buses eventually available, officials expect the expanded fleet to increase service capacity, accommodate growing passenger demand and provide residents with more convenient access to public transportation.

The government has not yet announced when all 52 buses will begin regular passenger operations.
