PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said he is prepared to perform his constitutional responsibilities if the federal government decides that an emergency is necessary in the province.
Speaking after meeting Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Peshawar on Sunday, Kundi said he would act according to the Constitution if the federal government reached such a decision.
The meeting took place amid heightened political tensions in the province following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s decision to launch a long march towards Islamabad.
According to the governor, the meeting with the interior minister focused on the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and recent political developments. The two sides also discussed measures aimed at maintaining law and order.
Kundi said any constitutional step concerning the province would be taken according to the relevant legal framework. He also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring that the situation does not deteriorate.
The federal government and PTI have recently failed to reach an agreement after several rounds of negotiations. The breakdown came as differences remained over counterterrorism measures and the provincial government’s role in dealing with security challenges.
Following the collapse of talks, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi began leading the PTI convoy towards Islamabad.
The development has increased political pressure on the provincial and federal governments, with authorities focusing on security arrangements along the route of the march.
The governor’s remarks came as the federal government continued consultations with provincial authorities over the evolving situation in KP. Any decision regarding an emergency would require consideration of the constitutional provisions governing such a step.
The meeting between Kundi and Naqvi is expected to remain significant as the PTI march progresses and the security situation develops.
