The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has reportedly terminated around 300 legal advisers following the imposition of governor’s rule in the province.
The move comes amid sweeping administrative changes after President Asif Ali Zardari imposed emergency measures and governor’s rule on October 11. The provincial government, previously led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ceased to function under the new arrangement.
The dismissals mark another significant development in the province’s changing administrative structure. However, the reported termination of legal advisers is separate from changes announced within the Advocate General’s Office.
Changes Within the Law Department
The Law Department has also removed 57 law officers from the Advocate General’s Office, including 26 additional advocate generals and 31 assistant advocate generals.
In addition, authorities have appointed 27 new law officers with the governor’s approval. The appointments took effect immediately, according to reports concerning the department’s latest notification.
These changes follow the transfer of provincial executive powers to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi under the emergency arrangement. An 11-member Advisory Council has also been formed to assist in running the province’s affairs.
The restructuring is part of wider administrative measures introduced after the provincial cabinet and chief minister ceased exercising their previous powers.
Governor’s Rule Reshapes Provincial Administration
The federal government introduced emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing concerns about worsening security and alleged shortcomings in counterterrorism coordination. PTI has rejected accusations against its leadership and criticised the suspension of its provincial government.
On October 15, a joint sitting of Parliament approved resolutions endorsing the emergency and governor’s rule. The decision has further intensified political tensions between the federal government and the opposition.
Meanwhile, the changes to legal appointments have raised questions about the future composition of the province’s legal administration. Further details about the reported termination of around 300 advisers, including the full scope of the decision, remain limited.
