KARACHI: A traditional donkey cart race was held at Native Jetty in Karachi as part of the city’s Independence Day celebrations.
Organised under the supervision of Commissioner Karachi, the event highlighted one of the city’s oldest sporting traditions.
The race started from the Native Jetty Bridge and ended at the Commissioner’s Office, attracting 40 donkey carts from across Karachi.
Koel, owned by Majeed Baloch, won the competition and secured first position after an exciting contest.
Meanwhile, Cheema Wala, owned by Pital Bakhsh, finished second, while Lal Badshah, owned by Shah Jahan Baloch, took third place.
Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi attended the prize distribution ceremony as the chief guest alongside senior police and administrative officials.
Additional Inspector General Azad Khan and DIG Traffic Syed Pir Muhammad Shah also attended the traditional sporting event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Naqvi said the race aimed to preserve Karachi’s centuries-old sporting traditions and promote healthy activities.
He added that such competitions could support peace and strengthen government efforts to encourage sports across the city.
Moreover, Azad Khan described donkey cart racing as one of Karachi’s oldest sports and called for private-sector support.
Similarly, Shah stressed the need to protect the city’s cultural heritage and traditional sporting activities. The event offered residents a colourful display of Karachi’s heritage while adding a traditional touch to Independence Day celebrations.
