Kenya’s Amos Kipruto claimed his first Chicago Marathon title on Sunday, while Ethiopia’s Hawi Feysa successfully defended her women’s crown. Both athletes delivered outstanding performances during the 48th edition of the prestigious race, setting personal bests in ideal racing conditions.
Kipruto completed the 26.2-mile course in 2:01:09, securing a memorable victory after finishing third in 2024 and second in 2025. Meanwhile, Feysa clocked 2:13:33 to retain her title, overcoming strong competition from Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi.
Kipruto Secures Long-Awaited Chicago Victory
Kipruto established his advantage during the second half of the race, pulling away from Uganda’s defending champion Jacob Kiplimo after approximately 30 kilometres. The Kenyan maintained his pace and crossed the finish line nearly two minutes ahead of his closest challenger.
Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele finished second in 2:02:56, while compatriot Milkesa Mengesha secured third place in 2:03:46. Kiplimo, who entered the competition as a pre-race favourite, eventually finished fourth in 2:04:18.
Kipruto’s winning time improved his previous personal best by 30 seconds. Consequently, he joined the world’s fastest marathon runners, matching Eliud Kipchoge’s position at fifth on the all-time performance list.
Feysa Triumphs After Intense Women’s Battle
The women’s race produced an equally competitive finish as Feysa battled Lokedi throughout the closing kilometres. Both runners remained together near the 40-kilometre mark before Feysa accelerated in the final stretch to secure victory.
Lokedi finished second in 2:14:07, while Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei claimed third place in 2:14:55. Notably, all three women finished under 2:15, marking a historic achievement in marathon competition.
More than 55,000 runners participated in the event, which featured elite athletes and recreational competitors across Chicago. Additionally, Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner set a women’s wheelchair marathon world record, finishing in 1:33:16 and improving her previous mark by one minute.
