Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of making Formula One history as he approaches his first world championship ahead of this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix.
The 20-year-old Italian needs to finish ninth or better in Mexico to secure the title, regardless of his rivals’ results. Following his victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Antonelli holds a commanding lead over his remaining challengers, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
If he secures the championship, Antonelli will become Formula One’s youngest-ever world champion, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s record. He would also become Italy’s first drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari won the title in 1953.
Mercedes Star Maintains Focus Ahead of Title Decider
Antonelli has won nine of the 18 races held so far this season, demonstrating remarkable consistency during his campaign. His performances have established him as the leading contender for the championship despite the pressure of competing at the highest level.
The young driver has said he intends to approach the Mexican race with the same mindset he has maintained throughout the season. Rather than focusing on the title, he wants to enjoy racing and finish the weekend strongly.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is anticipating a possible championship celebration, although the team may have to wait until the following Brazilian Grand Prix if Antonelli does not secure enough points in Mexico.
Rivals Face Difficult Task to Stop Antonelli
Russell trails his Mercedes teammate by 123 points, while Hamilton sits 124 points behind. Both drivers need strong results and must hope Antonelli finishes outside the top nine to keep their championship hopes alive.
However, Antonelli’s recent form makes such an outcome difficult for his rivals. His consistency and ability to perform under pressure have strengthened his position as the season approaches its conclusion.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc are expected to challenge for victory in Mexico. Although Antonelli does not necessarily need to win the race, a strong finish would secure his place in Formula One history.
