KHYBER: Malagori Police Station SHO Riaz Hussain Afridi was martyred after suffering critical injuries during an exchange of fire with smugglers of non-custom-paid vehicles in Khyber tribal district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
According to Khyber District Police Officer Waqar Ahmad, Afridi sustained serious wounds while leading an operation against the smugglers. He was rushed to a hospital in Peshawar for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police said two non-custom-paid vehicles were recovered from the site following the gunfight. Officers have launched a search operation to locate and arrest the suspects involved in the incident.
The vehicles were reportedly being transported towards Mohmand district through the Malagori route when the encounter took place. Police have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The funeral prayer of the martyred officer was held at Police Lines Khyber with full state honours. Senior civil and military officials, police officers, relatives and local residents attended the ceremony.
Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, DPO Waqar Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali, military officials, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Azmat Saeed and MPA Abdul Ghani were among those present.
Officials and mourners paid tribute to Afridi’s service. Following the funeral, his body was transported to his ancestral village of Ghandi for burial.
