Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has raised concerns over the alleged relocation of senior Pakistani bureaucrats abroad, questioning their commitment to the country while serving in influential government positions.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Asif acknowledged that Pakistan’s bureaucracy included capable and honest officers. However, he claimed that numerous officials had established permanent residences in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries over recent years.
According to the minister, some officials allegedly planned their relocation while remaining government employees, raising questions about their dedication to public service and national interests.
Asif particularly highlighted Portugal as an emerging destination for Pakistani bureaucrats seeking permanent residency. He said he had previously raised the issue on social media.
The defence minister further alleged that an individual facilitating permanent residency arrangements had fled after collecting substantial amounts of money from several influential bureaucrats. However, he did not identify the individual or disclose details of the alleged transactions.
Asif also questioned whether officials who had occupied senior positions, enjoyed government privileges and maintained close relationships with successive administrations remained fully committed to Pakistan.
His remarks have renewed debate over civil servants’ overseas settlement plans and their responsibilities to the state.
However, the allegations remain unverified. Asif did not name the officials allegedly involved or provide documentary evidence supporting his claims about the reported relocation arrangements in Portugal.
