Two young sisters were allegedly shot dead by their brother at their home in Karachi after a dispute over their use of social media. Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday in New Rehmanabad, within the jurisdiction of Shah Faisal Colony.
The deaths have raised fresh concerns about violence against women and restrictions imposed on their use of digital platforms.
Sisters Killed Inside Karachi Home
According to Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Fida Husain Janwari, the victims were identified as Sobia, 25, and Hira, 20. Their brother, Rehan, allegedly shot them inside their home.
Police said the initial investigation suggested that the suspect had previously warned his sisters against using TikTok. Investigators are examining whether this dispute led to the double murder.
The victims’ bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.
Police Search for Suspect
The senior police officer said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting. Police were working to locate and arrest him. According to the SSP, the suspect had a criminal record and had faced arrests in previous cases. However, authorities had not announced his arrest in the initial report.
Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings as the case progresses.
Incident Raises Concerns About Violence Against Women
The alleged killings highlight the serious consequences that can arise when family disputes turn violent. They also draw attention to concerns about women’s autonomy and their freedom to use social media.
However, investigators must establish the precise motive and circumstances through evidence gathered during the investigation.
The case also underscores the importance of addressing domestic conflict without resorting to violence. Further developments will depend on police findings and the legal proceedings that follow.
